Zodiac Signs In European Astrology

The word zodiac comes from the Greek for “ring of animals”. It refers to the pathway along which the planets orbit in the heavens. This circular band is technically called the ecliptic and is divided into 12 sections known as the astrological signs. Most of the signs are named after animals, hence “zodiac”.

Aries  (Ram) March 21 – April 20

Aries is symbolized by the horns of the Ram and represents the time of spring when the land is greening and the sap is rising. People ruled by this sign are assertive, impatient, open and direct.

Taurus (Bull)  April 21 – May 21

Taurus is symbolized by the head and horns of the bull, as it is associated with material goods and earthly pleasures. Steady, practical, and creative, Taurus is considered the builder of the Zodiac.

Gemini (Twins)  May 22 – June 21

First of the human creatures and symbolized by the Twins, Gemini represents communication.
People ruled by this sign are talkative, curious, and restless. Gemini is a busy sign, perpetually in motion.

Cancer (Crab)  June 22 – July 22

Cancer is symbolized by the protective shell of the Crab, representing deeply entwined parenthood and conservation. Cancer is the symbol of home, family, and heart. The sign of caring and nurturing.

Leo (Lion)  July 23 – August 22

Leo is symbolized by the lion, king of the beasts. It is the sign of nobility. This sign is ablaze with warmth and the well-being of summer. People ruled by this sign are proud and arrogant, yet loyal and brave.

Virgo (Maiden or Virgin) August 23 – September 22

Virgo is symbolized by the Maiden carrying a sheaf of corn. Virgo represents work and health. People ruled by virgo show organization, duty, routine, and service.

Libra (Scales)  September 23 – October 23

Libra is symbloized by the Scales because it deals with balance and equilibrium. It marks the halfway point in the year. People ruled by this sign focus on relationships, sociability, and harmony.

Scorpio (Scorpion)  October 24 – November 22

Scorpio is symbolized with its tail ready to sting. This is an intense sign associated with privacy and secrecy. People ruled by this sign will lash out with a deadly sting if provoked. Sex, power, and regeneration are the deeper issues.

Sagittarius (Archer)  November 23 – December 22

Sagittarius is symbolized by the archer. It is the sign of travel. The archer reaches for distant places and far-reaching intellectual concepts. People ruled by this sign seek to expand, are freedom-loving and philosophical.

Capricorn (Goat)  December 23 – January 20

Capricorn is symbolized by the profile of the Goat’s face and side horn. It represents the social climber.
It is the sign of authority: ambitious, conservative, and achievement-motivated.

Aquarius (Waterbearer or Urn)  January 21 – Februari 19

Aquarius is symbolized by the waterbearer. Aquarius sweeps away the past and looks to the future with its friendly, inventive, and thoroughly progressive nature. This sign is associated with sociability, teamwork, and group events.

Pisces (Fishes)  February 20 – March 20

Pisces is symbolized by two fish tied together but swimming in opposites directions. Reminiscent of the Yin-Yang sign. Pisces brings the zodiac to an end, enabling a new beginning. People ruled by this sign are dreamy, sensitive, imaginative, and receptive.

    This has very much been a post in progress. Last year, I started out listing the signs. That was quite an accomplishment, as for years and years, I had meant to start making sense of the signs, but could never get around to it. I would start to read books on astrology, but there was too much information that I could not connect to anything. So, I had to start simple. Just list the signs, and leave the people and ‘science’ out of it. Learning anything complex is to start with unburdened basics. Recently, I have come to add a bit more information as I started to branch out to learning about the natal chart. Yet, I persisted in keeping this post simple. Soon it may be time to tackle the signs one by one. Namaste.
